Simon Bwayo-From the Fields of Africa to American Soil
My guest is my dear and life long friend, Simon Bwayo! In 2007, God blessed me and my family with meeting the Bwayo family of fourteen. They had just arrived from a refugee camp in Kenya and were living a few doors down from our building on 38th street.
Bridge of Hope is celebrating our 20 year anniversary and Simon and his family were a huge part of what God was planning for Bridge of Hope. As well as His planting us in City Heights, San Diego, which is one of the largest refugee resettlement areas in the country. I had never met a refugee before meeting the Bwayo family. I will always remember the first time I talked with Simon under the big tree in front of what became Bridge of Hope. It was if the whole world stood still, and the earth was shaking under my feet- I knew in that moment, with complete clarity; a kairos moment.... Bridge of Hope was there to support and care for the refugees. At that time, many, many families, from all over the world, were coming to City Heights every week. God saw the needs and the radical adjustment people were making coming here- the trauma, suffering and the loss they had endured. Our Father God invited us to join Him in welcoming them to America. In turn, my heart was moved in a most profound way; forever changed. My new friends were now my family and teachers. Their faith rocked me! Their wisdom, their culture, love, and their joy.... it was all so beautiful and exciting. Their friendship and acceptance of me is such a powerful gift and blessing in my life.
Simon and his family left San Diego in 2012, and moved to Iowa, which is where they live today. Simon shares his journey and the great blessing of now having land ( Over an acre) to grow their own fruits and vegetables, which is the food they missed since living in America, not to mention, is very expensive to buy in the grocery stores. Now they not only have land, but a business! It is called East Africa Grown Flavor!
Truly a remarkable story of resilience and faith!
